Norwich, CT. (May 24, 2018) - The Mount St. Mary's baseball team dropped the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament Opening game 21-6 against Bryant on Thursday afternoon. Myles Nicholson led the Mount offense going 3 for 4 with one run batted in on the day. CJ Kozorosky recorded two RBI off the bench for the Mountaineers while Thomas Savastio and Matthew Kephart tabbed the other two RBI for Mount St. Mary's in the loss.
The Bulldogs jumped out to grab the early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Ward lined a RBI single to center field that plated James Ciliento for the first run of the game. The next three Bulldog runs were scored off of a RBI groundout from Chris Wright and a two RBI double from Nick Angelini.
Bryant added five runs off of four hits to take a 9-0 lead after three innings of play. Nick Angelini drove in his third RBI of the game when he hit a RBI single to left field that brought home Shane Kelly to start the scoring for the Bulldogs. Later in the inning, Malik Daly hit a RBI single and James Ciliento hit a two RBI triple to left center.
The Bulldogs tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 13-0 ballgame. Two RBI singles off the bats of Ryan Hart and James Ciliento began the scoring and Shane Kelly brought the other two runs home off of a two RBI single up the middle.
Freshman CJ Kozorosky got the Mount on the board with a two RBI single up the middle that plated Zack Costello and Thomas Savastio in the top of the sixth inning. The next batter, Myles Nicholson added to his good day with a RBI single through the left side that brought A.J. Narcise in to cross the plate for the Mount's third run of the game.
Ryan Hart's three run homerun down the left field line highlighted another five run inning for Bryant in the bottom of the sixth. The Bulldogs pushed two more runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh and one more in the bottom of the eighth.
The Mountaineers plated three more runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. After loading the bases, Thomas Savastio was hit by a pitch and Myles Nicholson walked home to score the first run of the inning. The last two runs were scored on a wild pitch and a RBI groundout from Matthew Kephart.
Trey McGough (4-7) received the loss for Mount St. Mary's and Steve Theetge (6-7) recorded the win for the Bulldogs. With the win, Bryant advances to 32-21-1 on the season with a NEC mark of 23-7 and with the loss, Mount St. Mary's moves to 21-32 on the year with a 15-14 NEC mark.
The Mount will play the loser of the second game today, #2 Wagner vs. #3 LIU Brooklyn, tomorrow, May 25 at 12 PM.
