Mount St. Mary's Baseball Drops Series Finale Against Bryant To Finish Up The Regular Season

Emmitsburg, Md. (May 18, 2018) - The Mount St. Mary's baseball team dropped the series finale against Bryant on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Bulldogs took the series two games to one. The Mountaineer offense was led by junior Patrick Causa who went 3 for 3 with a double and two of the Mount's three runs batted in. Freshman Myles Nicholson had a good game going 2 for 2 with a run scored in the loss. Senior Mitch Sgrignoli finished his career at E.T. Straw Family Stadium with an infield single to third base during his last at bat. Another senior, Jesse Archambault pitched 2.0 solid innings in relief while striking out three Bryant batters.

The Bulldogs grabbed an early 3-0 lead when they plated one run in the top of the first inning and two more runs in the top of the third inning. Mickey Gasper singled through the right side of the infield that brought James Ciliento home to cross the plate for the first run of the game. The two runs plated in the third inning were off of a RBI single from Ryan Ward and a sacrifice fly from Shane Kelly.

Mount St. Mary's climbed back in the bottom of the third to make it a one run ballgame, 3-2. Myles Nicholson singled up the middle to lead off the inning and advanced to second in the next at bat. Patrick Causa brought Nicholson home off of a RBI single to left field for the first run of the game for the Mount. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Zack Costello worked a walk that plated Alex Kriss.

Bryant and the Mountaineers traded runs in the fourth inning before the Bulldogs erupted to score 14 unanswered runs to close the game. In the top of the fourth, Bryan Hart hit a solo homerun over the right field wall for Bryant's fourth run of the game. The Bulldogs last 14 runs of the game were highlighted by six RBI singles and one RBI double. The Bryant leadoff hitter James Ciliento led the Bulldog offense going 3 for 5 with four RBI and a double. All of the hitters in the Bryant starting lineup had at least one run batted in.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Mitch Sgrignoli led off with a walk and advanced to second base off of a sacrifice bunt from Myles Nicholson. Patrick Causa hit a double to deep right center field that scored Sgrignoli. 

Michael Collins (3-8) received the loss for the Mountaineers and Jack Patterson (6-2) recorded the win for Bryant. With the loss, the Mount finished the regular season 21-31 with a Northeast Conference (NEC) mark of 15-13 and with the win, the Bulldogs finished the 2018 regular season 31-21-1 with a 22-7 mark in NEC play.

The Mount heads to the Northeast Conference Tournament next week, with the first game of the tournament being set for Thursday, May 24th.
