Tallahassee, Fla. (May 11, 2018) - The #13 Florida State Seminoles topped Mount St. Mary's 12-2 on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Seminoles took the first game of the four game series. A.J. Narcise recorded two of the Mount's six hits in the loss. Myles Nicholson, Patrick Causa, Randall Minogue, and Pat Daly picked up the other hits for the Mountaineers. Michael Collins pitched a solid 4.1 innings while only giving up three runs on five hits.
The Seminoles pushed the first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. With one out, Jason Lueck crushed a solo homerun over the right field fence. The Mountaineers tied the game up at one run apiece in the top of the second. Myles Nicholson doubled down the left field line with one out and advanced to third on the next at bat. Alex Kriss hit a fielder's choice ground ball to the short stop, who tried to throw out Nicholson at third, but Nicholson beat out the throw. Kriss advanced to second on the fielding error by the second baseman and Nicholson stole home for the Mount's first run of the game.
Florida State grabbed the lead again in the bottom half of the third to make it a 2-1 game before Mount St. Mary's evened the game at 2-2 when they plated a run in the top of the fourth inning. Jason Lueck led off the bottom of the third with a double to right center for his second hit of the game and scored off of a double to right field from Rhett Aplin. In the top of the fourth, Randall Minogue drilled a line drive triple to center field and came all the way around to score after the throwing error by the center fielder.
The Seminoles added one run in the bottom of the fifth, four runs in the bottom of the sixth, three runs in the bottom of the seventh, and two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a commanding 12-2 lead after seven innings of play. Florida State's scoring was highlighted by a RBI double from Aplin in the fifth, a two RBI double off the bat of Mike Salvatore in the sixth, another RBI double this time from Cal Raleigh in the sixth, and a two RBI single from the pinch hitter, Kyle Cavanaugh.
Michael Collins (3-7) received the loss for the Mount and Drew Parrish (4-0) earned the win for Florida State. With the win, the Seminoles move to 33-16 on the year and with the loss, the Mountaineers drop to 20-26 on the year.
Mount St. Mary's and Florida State will play a doubleheader tomorrow, May 12 with the first game beginning at 2 PM.
