Savannah, Georgia (March 10, 2017) - Dalton Clouser and Dennis Stewart each had multi-hit games while Jordan Lawson pitched 5.2 innings, struck out five batters, and did not allow a run in relief of Zach Call but Mount St. Mary's was edged by Savannah State 6-5 in extra innings on Friday night.
The Mount jumped out to grab the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a RBI triple from Clouser that plated Jared Urban. Savannah State evened things up in the bottom of the first when Turner Davis hit a sacrifice fly RBI that scored Kyle Gerdts.
Patrick Causa tacked on another run for the Mountaineers with a sacrifice fly RBI that plated Jared Urban, who led off the inning with a single to centerfield, in the top of the third inning. The Tigers tied it all up again with a RBI walk by Mason Calloway and added another run on a RBI groundout to firstbase from Jacob Lightle making it a 3-2 game going into the fifth inning.
Mount tallied a run in the top of the seventh when Zach Hostetter scored on an error that tied the game at 3 apiece. The game would stay this way until the top of the tenth inning when Mount St. Mary's recorded two more runs.
Tyler Post doubled down the leftfield line that plated Stewart and Chris Wessels in extra innings giving Mount the advantage but The Tigers plated three runs in the bottom of the tenth inning recording a 6-5 walkoff victory. Davis doubled down the leftfield line scoring Bryce Luken starting the scoring for Savannah State. Jalen Atterbury plated Bernard Barnes with a RBI double that tied the game back up at 5-5. Two batters later, Khalyd Cox hit a sacrifice fly RBI to left scoring Joshua Pittell for the late night win.
Noah Smith (0-1) picked up the loss for the Mountaineers while Paul Sheffield (1-0) picked up the win for Savannah State.
The third game of the series will be played tomorrow, March 11 at 12 p.m.
