Durham, NC (March 8, 2017) - Mount St. Mary's baseball fell to Duke 10-3 on Wednesday afternoon. Third basemen, Vaughn Parker II registered two RBI to lead Mount offense. Noah Smith pitched 3.1 and struck out a batter in relief for Seth Schubert.
The Mountaineers struck first in the contest, plating two runs in the top of the first inning. Patrick Causa singled up the middle followed by a single through the right side by Will Enrico to put two runners on base. Parker brought them in with a two RBI double giving Mount the early 2-0 lead.
The Blue Devils answered in the bottom of the first inning scoring a run of their own when Conine Griffin plated Jimmy Herron on a RBI groundout to the second baseman. Duke added one more in the bottom of the second on a fielder's choice that scored Justin Bellinger to tie the game at two apiece.
Mount St. Mary's tacked on another run in the top of the third before surrendering eight straight runs to the Blue Devils, five in the bottom of the fourth, one in the bottom of the seventh, and two more in the bottom of the eigth taking a 10-3 lead into the ninth inning. Coleman Williams came in to close the game in the top of the ninth not allowing the Mount to get a hit.
Seth Schubert (0-3) picked up the loss in the decision throwing 3.2 innings for Mount while Graeme Stinson (1-0) picked up the win throwing 4.0 innings for Duke.
The Mountaineers head to Savannah State for a three game series starting Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
