Las Cruces, New Mexico (February 25, 2017) - The Mount St. Mary's University baseball team dropped a pair of contests in the doubleheader at New Mexico State on Saturday. Patrick Causa led the Mount on the day, going 5-9 with three RBI in the pair of contests.
GAME ONE: A late Mountaineer rally fell short in the first game as they dropped to New Mexico State by a 6-3 final. Mount St. Mary's scored one run in the 7th and 8th innings, but couldn't complete the comeback, eventually falling by three.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Zach Hostetter hit a solo home run to left center for his first home run of the year.
New Mexico State would tack on a run in the next three innings taking a 3-1 lead going into the sixth inning. Austin Botello evened things up with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the third. Greg Popylisen singled to shortstop scoring LJ Hatch while advancing a runner to second in the bottom of the fourth. The Aggies would score an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth when Dan Hetzel reached first on an error by Hostetter, scoring Botello.
Mount would add a run in the seventh and eigth inning to try to mount a comeback. Patrick Causa singled to left driving in Alex Kriss in the top half of the seventh. New Mexico added one of their own in the bottom of the seventh when Hetzel scored on a pass ball. Damond Nixon would ground out to the first basemen bringing home Sean Kelly, to score an unearned run for Mount in the top of the eigth. The Aggies scored two more runs in the bottom of the eigth and Rugar Rodriguez would come in to shut the door, finalizing the win for New Mexico State 6-3.
Michael Collins (0-1) went 5.0 innings on the mound and allowed two earned runs in the losing effort, while Kyle Bradish (1-0) went 6.0 innings on the mound and allowed only one earned run in the win. Rugar Rodriguez picked up his second save of the year going one inning pitched and striking out the side in order.
GAME TWO: In the second game of the doubleheader, Mount once again jumped out to the early lead when Patrick Causa singled up the middle bringing in Sean Kelly in the top of the first. Causa went 3-for4 with 2 RBI.
New Mexico State would answer with four runs in the bottom of the first and nine more in the bottom of the second, scoring 13 straight runs.
The Aggies would score two more in the bottom half of the third, three more in the fourth inning, and six more in fifth. Roman Trujillo would add to the mele connecting on a 2-0 fastball for a solo home run. Austin Botello went 4-for-6 with 4 RBI and Brent Sakurai went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI to lead New Mexico State to a 25-4 victory.
Brendan Dabagian came in to pitch one inning in relief allowing no runs and striking out one batter for the Mount.
Trey Mcgough (0-1) took the loss for the Mount pitching just one inning allowing eight earned runs while Mattew McHugh recorded the win for the Aggies pitching five innings allowing four earned runs
